Entropy Numbers of Diagonal Operators of Logarithmic Type

We determine the asymptotic behaviour (as k →∞, up to multiplicative constants not depending on k) of the entropy numbers ek (Dσ : lp → lq), 1 ≤ p ≤ q ≤ ∞, of diagonal operators generated by logarithmically decreasing sequences σ = (σn). This complements earlier results by Carl [2] who investigated the case of power-like decay of the diagonal. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 47B06, 46B45, 46B70, 28C20.

Entropy Numbers of General Diagonal Operators
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the entropy numbers of diagonal operators D : `p → `q, (xk) 7→ (σkxk), 0 < p, q ≤ ∞, under mild regularity and decay conditions on the generating sequence (σk). Our results extend the known estimates for polynomial and logarithmic diagonals (σk). Moreover, we also consider some exotic intermediate examples like σk = exp(− √ log k).
